About UPC-A

A UPC-A barcode is the 12-digit code on almost every product sold in North American shops. The first digit plus the manufacturer part together form your GS1 company prefix; the next digits identify the item; the last digit is a check digit that lets the scanner catch a misread.

This generator draws the bars. It does not issue numbers. If your products will be sold through retailers or marketplaces that verify barcodes, you need numbers licensed from GS1 (gs1us.org in the US). For internal use (a stockroom, a library, a workshop) any 12-digit value with a correct check digit scans fine.

Keep UPC-A black on white or on a light background, at 80% magnification or larger, and do not truncate the bar height: many retail scanners reject short UPCs even when a phone reads them.

UPC-A questions

Do I need to buy UPC numbers from GS1?

To sell through most retailers and Amazon, yes: they check the GS1 company prefix. For internal inventory you can use any 12 digits with a valid check digit. This tool never invents or registers numbers.

What happens if I paste 11 digits?

The GS1 check digit is calculated and appended, so 03600029145 becomes 036000291452. If you paste 12 digits we verify the last one and flag the row if it is wrong.

What is the smallest UPC-A I can print?

GS1 allows 80% of nominal: about 29.83 × 20.74 mm including quiet zones. Smaller than that and retail scanners start to struggle.

UPC-A vs EAN-13: which do I need?

Scanners worldwide read both. UPC-A is traditional in the US and Canada; EAN-13 everywhere else. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading zero, so the numbers are interchangeable.
