About EAN-8

EAN-8 holds just 8 digits, so GS1 issues them individually and only when an EAN-13 would cover too much of the pack. Codes starting with 0 or 2 are reserved for internal, in-store use, which makes EAN-8 handy for shelf labels in your own shop.

Because the code is short, every bar is critical. Print at 100% size or larger when you can, and keep the quiet zones clear of text and edges.

Can I turn an EAN-13 into an EAN-8?

No. They are separate number spaces. GS1 assigns EAN-8 numbers individually.

Which EAN-8 numbers are free for internal use?

Numbers beginning with 0 or 2 are for restricted, in-store circulation. They will not collide with GS1-issued EAN-8s.
