About ITF-14

The first digit of an ITF-14 is the packaging indicator (1–8), which says which pack level the carton is, for example a case of 12 versus a pallet layer. The next 12 digits are usually the item's GTIN without its check digit, and the last is a new check digit.

ITF-14 is designed to survive being printed straight onto corrugated board, which is why its bars are wide and why the thick bearer frame is there.

How do I build a GTIN-14 from my product's UPC?

Take the 12-digit UPC, drop its check digit, add a leading 0 to make 12 digits, put your packaging indicator (1–8) in front, then let this tool add the new check digit.

Can I remove the bearer bars?

They are part of the ITF-14 specification for printing on cardboard, so they are always drawn here.
