About EAN-13

EAN-13 encodes 13 digits: the first two or three are a GS1 country/organisation prefix (they say where the company prefix was issued, not where a product was made), then your company number, the item reference and a check digit.

Books use EAN-13 too. An ISBN-13 starting with 978 or 979 is printed as an EAN-13, so you can generate ISBN barcodes here by pasting the 13-digit ISBN without hyphens.

As with UPC, retail use needs numbers licensed from your national GS1 office. Internal use needs only a correct check digit.

EAN-13 questions

Can I make ISBN barcodes here?

Yes. Paste the ISBN-13 digits (978… or 979…) without hyphens. The price add-on (EAN-5) is not included.

Does the prefix mean country of origin?

No. The first digits show which GS1 office issued the company prefix. A product with a 400–440 prefix was registered through GS1 Germany but can be made anywhere.

Why is a row flagged "Check digit should be…"?

The last digit does not match the GS1 mod-10 calculation. Either the number was typed wrongly or the check digit was lost in a spreadsheet (leading zeros are a common casualty).
